The story of the Pressure Drop began on stage. Back in the 2010s, as an active live and studio bass player, I tried countless compressor pedals, but none of them quite did what I wanted. Playing in a Beatles tribute band with my beloved Höfner Violin Basses (strung with flatwounds, of course), I quickly realized just how unique and challenging those instruments can be: huge low-end, very little top and almost no sustain.
In the 1960s, that tone was perfect. But in today’s musical landscape, I felt it could use a bit more focus, balance and sustain to really sit right in a modern mix. In the studio, I fell in love with what the LA-2A did to my bass, that smooth sustain, warm tone and natural balance. That’s when I started thinking: what if I could bring that legendary studio sound into a compact pedal format? That’s how the Pressure Drop was born.
The first version was originally designed at the request of Höfner Guitars. A few tweaks later, I released my own version in 2019, only a handful were made, as I still wasn’t completely satisfied. After taking a few years off and coming back with fresh ears and experience, I rebuilt it from the ground up. The new model features a high-end transformer and a refined circuit design that capture the unmistakable vintage warmth and character of the LA-2A.
I realized that if I could make my Höfner basses sound exactly the way I wanted, the pedal would work beautifully with any instrument. And yes, it does.
